Dhul Qa'dah
Dhul Qa'dah — meaning The Master of Truce — is the 11th month of the Islamic Hijri calendar.
Overview
Dhul Qa'dah is the eleventh month of the Islamic Hijri calendar and one of the four sacred months. The name derives from the Arabic root for sitting or staying — a reference to the pre-Islamic prohibition on warfare during this month, which traditionally caused tribes to remain in their settlements rather than wage battles. Dhul Qa'dah opens the two-month pilgrimage season that culminates in Hajj and Eid al-Adha.
Notable Observances
Pilgrims preparing for the Hajj traditionally begin their journey to Mecca during Dhul Qa'dah, and many enter the state of ihram for the optional Umrah. The month contains no major canonical festivals, but it is widely observed as a period of intensified spiritual preparation. Many Muslims fast voluntarily, increase Qur'an recitation, and prepare donations for the upcoming Eid al-Adha sacrifices and zakat distributions.
