Rabi al-Awwal
Rabi al-Awwal — meaning The First Spring — is the 3rd month of the Islamic Hijri calendar.
Overview
Rabi al-Awwal is the third month of the Islamic Hijri calendar and one of the most beloved months across the Muslim world, as it contains the birth date of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ on the twelfth day. The Mawlid al-Nabi celebrations of Rabi al-Awwal commemorate this birth and have been observed in various forms across the Muslim world since at least the eleventh century, when the Fatimid dynasty in Egypt institutionalized the festival.
Notable Observances
In addition to the Mawlid, Rabi al-Awwal also contains the date of the Hijra of the Prophet ﷺ from Mecca to Medina (eighth of Rabi al-Awwal in 622 CE) and the date of his death (twelfth of Rabi al-Awwal in 632 CE). Mosques in Egypt, Pakistan, India, Indonesia, Turkey, and across the diaspora host milad gatherings featuring qasidas, sirah recitations, and the distribution of sweets. Saudi Arabia and most Salafi-influenced communities do not observe formal Mawlid celebrations, regarding them as later innovation.
