Hindu Lunar Month · 2nd of 12
Vaishakha
Overview
Vaishakha is the second month of the Hindu lunar calendar, falling typically in April or May. The month is sacred across multiple Indian traditions: Buddhists worldwide observe Vesak (Buddha Purnima) on the full moon of Vaishakha as the day of the Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana. The Punjabi harvest festival of Vaisakhi falls on the first day of the month and is also observed as the Sikh New Year and the founding day of the Khalsa.
Notable Festivals
The full moon of Vaishakha (Vaishakha Purnima) is observed as Buddha Purnima with all-night vigils, lamp-lighting, and the recitation of Buddhist sutras. Akshaya Tritiya, the third day of the bright fortnight, is regarded as one of the most auspicious days of the Hindu year for new beginnings, charitable giving, and the purchase of gold. The month also contains Hanuman Jayanti in many regional calendars.
