Hindu Lunar Month · 5th of 12
Shravana
Overview
Shravana is the fifth month of the Hindu lunar calendar and one of the most spiritually significant months of the year, particularly for the worship of Lord Shiva. The month typically falls in July or August and is dedicated to the offering of water (Jal Abhishek) to Shiva lingams across India. Mondays of Shravana are especially auspicious and many Hindus undertake the Shravan Somvar fast on each Monday of the month.
Notable Festivals
The full moon of Shravana is observed as Raksha Bandhan, the festival celebrating the bond between brothers and sisters. The month also contains Naga Panchami (worship of serpents), Hariyali Teej (the celebration of the monsoon), Krishna Janmashtami (the birth of Lord Krishna) on the eighth of the dark fortnight, and the conclusion of the Kanwar Yatra pilgrimage to Hindu Shiva temples.
