About the Hijri Year
The Islamic Hijri calendar is a purely lunar calendar of twelve months (Muharram, Safar, Rabi al-Awwal, Rabi al-Thani, Jumada al-Awwal, Jumada al-Thani, Rajab, Sha'ban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhul Qa'dah, and Dhul Hijjah) totaling approximately 354.36 days. The calendar was instituted by the second caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab in 638 CE (17 AH), with year 1 AH defined as the year of the Hijra — the migration of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions from Mecca to Medina in July 622 CE. Because the Hijri year is approximately 11 days shorter than the solar year, Islamic observances drift through the Gregorian seasons over a 33-year cycle.
The Hijri year 1451 AH spans from approximately May 14, 2029 (the first observance listed above) through the following Gregorian months, with the final months extending into the following Gregorian year. Browse our Hijri-to-Gregorian conversion tools for any specific date lookup.
